About Under Flooring Heating

Growing up, my grandmother always made us take off our shoes when we entered the house. During the summer, it was great, however, during the winter the cold seemed to cut through our thick socks. Today, I still take off my shoes when I enter the house, however, during the mid of winter I walk around barefoot on nice warm floors, thanks to underfloor heating.

By keeping your feet warm, your entire body feels warmer. With under floor heating, the cables or tubs running under the floor warms the flooring. This warmth then rises, heating the entire room. No more do you have to feel a draft as the furnace turns on, or smell the fumes from a gas heater.

However, under floor heating systems should be installed when a home is being constructed, as it is more convent and less expensive. Installing under floor heating systems in an existing home requires that the finished floor be removed before the heating pads can be installed. This means ceramic or marble tiles would have to be removed and the homeowner will then have to pay an additional cost for new tiles to be installed.

Many times this amount of construction makes it almost impossible to install under floor heating in older houses due to the high cost of removing the old tiles, then purchasing new tiles and having them installed. However, depending on the system installed, most under floor heating systems reduce energy cost by as much as 20 to 40%. This means that the system could end up paying for itself.

An even greater savings can be achieved for systems fitted with timers, so that the system is turned back during times of day when the occupants of the home are not there, or during peak energy times. Because under floor heating systems take a long time to cool down, most homeowners do not notice that great a change in tempter when they are at home and the times have set back the temperature of the system.
